MSDSs were commonly used before the adoption of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), which led to the transition to Safety Data Sheets for standardized hazard communication.
Why drop the M? OSHA standardized the format, as well as simplifying the name, giving consistency with the Globally Harmonized System used in the European Union. SDS is a simpler and more effective way to communicate the hazards of the chemicals used.
MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) is now called an SDS (Safety Data Sheet).
The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) (29 CFR 1910.1200(g)), revised in 2012, requires that the chemical manufacturer, distributor, or importer provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) (formerly MSDSs or Material Safety Data Sheets) for each hazardous chemical to downstream users to communicate information on these hazards.
By 1 June 2015, employers were required to have their workplace labeling and hazard communication programs updated as necessary including all MSDSs replaced with SDS-formatted documents.

How often should an MSDS be updated? If new, significant information becomes available before the three years has elapsed, the supplier is required to update the product label and MSDS.
