CANS training is for clinicians in certain levels of care who will be providing behavioral health assessments to MassHealth children and youth under the age of 21.
CANS is a certification for registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in the field of aesthetic and cosmetics. The certification establishes the credentials of the provider, ensuring that they have the necessary training and background.
Separate from MassHealth, certain other Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) agencies, including the Department of Mental Health (DMH), Department of Children and Families (DCF), and Department of Youth Services (DYS) have adopted the MassHealth version of CANS for use within their programs.
CANS assessment is required upon enrollment and every 90 days thereafter. The assessment is billed as part of the typical day/unit rate. Effective for DOS beginning October 31, 2023, reassessments are required at least every 180 days (or more often as clinically appropriate).
In Massachusetts, the Department of Youth Services (DYS) uses the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessment tool. This tool is utilized to assess the needs and strengths of youth involved in the juvenile justice system.
