In many schools, a doctorate (OTD) is also being offered as an entry-level degree.
Licensed occupational therapists must have a masters in occupational therapy in occupational therapy. After earning a bachelors degree, completing occupational therapy courses can take between two to six years, depending on the program and the chosen course of study.
Next Step: Apply for your State License You will need to apply for a state license in order to practice. All jurisdictions, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have some form of regulation of occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants.
The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT), Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) credential validates the ability to provide services for people suffering from mental, physical, emotional or developmental impairments.
