The South Coast Air Quality Management District, also using the acronym South Coast (AQMD), formed in 1976, is the air pollution agency responsible for regulating stationary sources of air pollution in the South Coast Air Basin and the Coachella Valley portion of the Salton Sea Air Basin, in Southern California.
On Oct. 14, 1947, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors established the nation's first air pollution control program by creating the Los Angeles County Air Pollution Control District. This year, 1997, marks the 50th anniversary of an epic war on smog that has been characterized by continual progress.
Efforts to control pollution are necessary to ensure that our air meets state and federal air quality standards. Standards are set by both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and locally, by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Under federal and state law, the South Coast Air Quality Management District is under a legal obligation to enforce air pollution regulations. These regulations are primarily meant to ensure that the surrounding (or ambient) air meets federal and state air quality standards.

The rule has been amended 14 times, the last amendment was in October 2017 and included VOC limit reductions for 18 categories and new Quantity and Emissions Reporting (QER) requirements.
