The NYSEG delivery rate increase referenced in the resolution was already approved by the PSC in 2023. The hike, implemented over three years, will increase NYSEGs electric delivery rate by 62 percent and the gas delivery rate by 17.8 percent.
NYSEGs website said smart meters automatically transmit usage data, so the need for bill estimates, onsite visits and customer meter reads is greatly reduced. Smart meters are more accurate because while legacy meters were only read every other month, a smart meter reads itself.
If you decide you do not want to receive the benefits of a smart meter, you can choose to opt-out and have a conventional or non-communicating meter installed instead. You can only opt-out if you are on a residential SC1 rate.
However, if you are a residential customer and would like to opt out of having a smart meter you certainly can. Our monthly opt-out fee to keep a legacy meter is $13.47 currently and subject to change in the future. The opt-out fee is per account and applies if you have one or more meters we were unable to upgrade.
* Once opted-out of the program, you will have a new, conventional, or non-communicating, meter installed instead. Since this meter will not transmit data to us automatically, your meter will need to continue to be read manually by a utility representative and you will be charged the following fees for this service.
