Auto, Fire, and Medical alarm systems are excluded. A permit is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance.
To reduce unnecessary calls for service and better use limited police resources, all owners of electronic security alarm systems in the City of Charlotte and unincorporated areas of Mecklenburg County MUST obtain a permit (auto and fire alarms are excluded).
You must have a business license to operate your business in the city of Greenville. Applications can be obtained online or at the Permits and License office on the 4th floor of City Hall. Fees for business licenses vary according to the type of business you are operating.

No person shall use an alarm system without first obtaining a permit from the City. Alarm permits are not transferable. Persons obtaining possession of alarm properties must file an application for an alarm permit within 30 days.
Each city in SC and nine counties (Beaufort, Charleston, Dorchester, Horry, Jasper, Marion, Orangeburg, Richland, and Sumter counties) in SC require a business license to be obtained for any business that is located in or doing business in their jurisdiction.
(a) Permit required: No person shall use an alarm system that relies on a third-party alarm company to notify the police department in the event the alarm is activated without first obtaining a permit to operate such a system from the police department. A ten-dollar ($10.00) fee shall be charged for such a permit.
Any resident or business who does not currently own an alarm system shall not make an alarm system operational until an alarm user's permit has been properly obtained.
No person shall use an alarm system without first obtaining a permit from the City. Alarm permits are not transferable.
