This ensures that the rate of the Guided Window is set at the right speed for every child. The Start-Up process takes 2-4 lessons to complete (30-60 minutes).
A typical 30- to 45-minute Reading Mastery lesson includes seven to nine short activities that encompass multiple strands of content, such as phonemic awareness, lettersound correspondence, sounding out words, word recog- nition, vocabulary, oral reading fluency, or comprehension.
Effective mini-lessons last about 10-20 minutes, follow a four-step rhythm, and progress through the I-do, We-do, You-do gradual-release model. Whether youre teaching reading or writing, this same lesson pattern is the gold standard for keeping students engaged during whole-class instruction.
Plan enough time for each session (15-20 minutes) Youll want to give yourself and the children enough time to read aloud, to enjoy, and to discuss the story, poem, or information text.
Reading Mastery is designed to help students in grades K-6 learn efficiently by using intensive, explicit and systematic teaching. The program is broken into briskly paced daily lessons that include systematic, explicit instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics.

Reading Mastery Signature Edition is an efficacy-proven core comprehensive program. It gives teachers the flexibility to use reading, language arts, and literature together or separately, each strand can be targeted for use as an intervention program.
Unfortunately, Reading Mastery does not do a good job with higher order thinking skills. But, dont get me wrong, its a great program for transitioning a child from all decoding to reading for meaning. Not only that, the program inspires confidence in students. (Its almost impossible to do poorly on their tests!).
We recommend spending about 20 minutes per day, five days a week, on reading instruction, but you can adjust this for early readers or for older remedial students if necessary. Short daily lessons are much more effective than longer, less frequent lessons. It can be helpful to set a timer.
