The disciples of Jesus will lose their saltiness when they compromise with the world or learn to love its ways. Instead of being different by remaining godly and faithful to Jesus, their love for wealth, fame, luxury or pleasure may lead to a loss of their saltiness.
When the apostle John saw the glorified Christ, he fell at His feet as though dead (Revelation 1:17). However, the Lord responded by telling Him not to fear. He identified himself as He did in verse 8 as the first and the last. Because believers are united by faith to Him, who is eternal, they too have nothing to fear.
He says in this verse that God is the one who has assigned these particular places in life to His people when they were called to faith. God intends to make use of each of us. For the most part, that means serving and obeying in the exact positions and relationships we were in when He called us.
In 1:17, John is making it clear that the Word who was in the beginning with God, the Word who was God, and the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us, is none other than Jesus the Messiah of Israel. As I pointed out in our last study, Gods grace and truth reach their apex at the cross.
In the King James Version of the Bible the text reads: So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and. from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

Matthew sums up his genealogy of Jesus in a specific way in this verse, showing that he built it precisely to fit a specific theme he had in mind. Those who compare the genealogy to the Old Testament will notice Matthew has left out several links in the chain known elsewhere in Scripture.
