OPT Quick Facts: You do not need a job offer to apply for OPT. You may not pursue a new course of full-time study while on OPT. The application is approved by United States Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS), but OPT must first be recommended by OIA.
Students are eligible to count volunteering or unpaid internships as OPT employment, provided the opportunity does not violate U.S. labor laws. The volunteer position or unpaid internship must meet all other OPT regulations, including that it is related to the student's major and is at least 21 hours per week.
You may work for more than one qualifying employer while on STEM OPT, but all employment must be related to your most recently completed degree program, all employers must be enrolled in E-Verify and complete reporting requirements (i.e. I-983s), and you must work a minimum of 20 hours a week for each employer.
Multiple post-completion OPT jobs can be carried out once you complete your studies in a college or a university. You may work for more than one employer or job, but all employment must be related to your degree program. The cumulative number of hours should be 20 or more in a week.
Can STEM OPT be unpaid? Employment during STEM OPT must be paid as outlined on the I-983 Training Plan. Unpaid internships, volunteering, community service work, and unpaid research are not valid employment types on STEM OPT.
