CP2501, CP2000, and CP3219A are three IRS notices with many similarities. All three are based on discrepancies between what you reported on your tax return and information the IRS has received from third parties. Also, all three provide an opportunity to dispute the amount owedbut with varying degrees of urgency.
The Notice CP501 (also referred to as the 1st Notice) is mailed to you because there is a balance due (money you owe the IRS) on one of your tax accounts.
If the CP2501 notice is correct and you have other income, credits or expenses to report: Complete Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Write CP2501 on top of Form 1040-X. Choose a reply option and submit the form with your notice response form.
Notice CP2501 is not an IRS audit. If you disagree the notice asks that you provide an explanation for the difference between the amount you reported on your return and the amount reported to the IRS by third parties.
Notice CP2501 is sent to notify you that one or more items on your return dont match what was reported to the IRS by third parties (e.g., employers or financial institutions).
