The arterial oxygen pressure (PaO2) can be directly assessed with an arterial blood gas test (ABG) or estimated with a venous blood gas test (VBG). The alveolar oxygen pressure (PAO2) is not easily measured directly; instead, it is estimated using the alveolar gas equation: PAO2 = (Patm PH2O) FiO2 PaCO2/RQ.
PaO2 is a measurement of the partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood and requires an arterial blood gas (ABG). In many settings an ABG may not be practical or feasible, and thus the established mathematical relationship between SpO2 and PaO2 can be used.
SaO2 stands for oxygen saturation, and it is a measurement of the percentage of hemoglobin that is bound to oxygen. Normal SaO2 levels are usually considered to be between 95-100%. PaO2 stands for the partial pressure of oxygen, and it is a measurement of the pressure of the oxygen that is found in the blood.

The relationship in blood between oxygen saturation (SO2) and partial pressure (PO2) is described graphically by the oxygenhaemoglobin dissociation curve (ODC) (figure 1). As defined above, SO2 represents the overall percentage of haemoglobin binding sites which are occupied by oxygen.
There is a distinct relationship between PaO2 and SpO2 which is illustrated by the Oxygen Dissociation Curve (see image). This relationship can be altered by many factors (e.g. temperature, FDG, pH) but generally follows the classic S-shape graph with PaO2 on the x axis and oxygen saturation on the y axis.
SpO2 = oxygen saturation as measured by pulse oximeter. SaO2 = oxygen saturation as measured by blood analysis (e.g. a blood gas) PaO2 = partial pressure of oxygen in the blood, as measured by blood analysis.
