An apprentice must initially be registered with a licensed trainer as a stablehand / rider and serve a probationary period with a Racing NSW trainer before being entering into an apprentice jockey indenture with that trainer. This process will occur following Academy style training.
Apprentices (Flat) get 80 per cent of their fee at 7lb, 5lb and 3lb, and 80 per cent of prize money at 7lb and 5lb, rising to 90 per cent at 3lb. Conditionals (jumps) get 100 per cent of fees and prize-money throughout their claim.
Eligibility Requirements: Thoroughbred racing is a weight-making sport applicants must demonstrate a suitable and sustainable healthy race riding weight. Applicants must be: An Australian citizen, OR. Applicants must have been a member of the Rider Development Squad (RDS) for the previous 12 months.
(a) An apprentice jockey is a race rider who has ridden less than 40 winners or less than two years since first having been licensed in any racing jurisdiction, and who otherwise meets the license qualifications of a jockey.
Certification or Licensing All professional jockeys must be licensed to ride in races. Each state has its own requirements, but includes a minimum age.
