T4s are given to employees and the CRA. (You need to create a T4 for each province and territory in which the employee earned income.) T4As are given to independent contractors and the CRA. (Same as a T4, create one for each province and territory in which the contractor was paid.)
Employers must also file a T4 Summary, which summarizes all the employment income, CPP contributions, and EI premiums reported for all employees during the year, along with the T4 slip.
If you cant access your T4 slip, dont skip filing your taxes. Use your last pay stub to calculate approximate earnings and deductions. The CRA will review your return, so be transparent about the missing information and file an adjustment later if needed.
If you have a CRA My Account, you can access your T4 slips online account as soon as they are filed to CRA by the employer, and usually, these should be available in mid-March. You can also access T4 slips from previous years on your account.
You must keep a copy of the T4 slips and summary for your records. For more information about how to keep adequate books and records, go to Keeping records. The CRA accepts customized versions of the T4 slip.
