ABSTRACT - The unfolding of the psychotherapeutic relationship is considered to proceed in four main stages: Commitment, Process, Change and Termination. Each stage has its own tasks and sub-stages, and has to be reasonably completed before transition to the next can take place.
The VPPS consists of seven scales which can be grouped under the headings of: Exploratory Processes, Patient Involvement, and Therapist-Offered Relationship. Its reliability and other psychometric properties are considered satisfactory so that the instrument can be recommended for operational use.
Each of the four alliance scales (PWC, PC, WSC, and TUI) contains 6 items, three positive and three negative. The therapist version, CALPAS-T, consists of 24 items rated on a 7- point scale (Appendix B). The CALPAS-T contains items which closely parallel those of the patient version.
Ideally, the therapeutic relationship has a clear starting point and ending point. It progresses through the four stages outlined above: commitment, process, change, and termination.
The Comparative Psychotherapy Process Scale (CPPS) is a 20-item scale which aims to capture technical features distinguishing cognitive behavioral (CBT) from psychodynamic (PD) psychotherapy (and vice versa) in two corresponding subscales (CBT and PD Subscale).
