The settlement, which had been known as Peteetneet Creek, was renamed Payson in 1851 after James Pace. Payson was incorporated as a city on 21 January 1853.
The oldest home in Payson, the John Dixon House is red sandstone with intricate carvings.
Payson celebrates its heritage through monuments such as the historic Main Street, Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center, and several Payson Historical Society markers that note houses and other sites in the city over a hundred years old. The city was the birthplace of singer-songwriter Jewel.
In 1983, filming for the movie Footloose started in Payson, Utah and became a beloved classic, leaving its mark on the community of Payson for the last 40 years.
Payson was founded on October 20, 1850 when three wagons entered the current site of Payson.

Payson, Utah, is a delightful little town situated just about 15 minutes from Provo on the I-15 road and it is near a big Middle City Road. Situated in the front Wasatch and known for its breathtaking scenery and charming small-town atmosphere, Payson is a place you must see.
While Mormons still predominate, religious diversity is found in Payson. The early settlers were members of the original Payson Ward, organized in 1851. There are now four LDS stakes in the Payson area, with a total of twenty-seven wards within these stakes.
