The Senior Degree Audit (SDA) process is an audit of a students academic record to ensure that the student is on the right path toward graduation and commencement. The main purpose of the SDA meeting is to identify remaining degree requirements needed for students to graduate.
With instructor permission, degree and non-degree seeking students may audit graduate lecture courses as space permits. As the term implies, auditors listen rather than engage in class discussions and projects.
All students, matriculant and non-degree, may audit any course other than a laboratory, provided attendance in the course does not involve the use of consumable material and/or equipment. Auditors will be charged regular tuition.
Senior Citizens who are New York State residents and who are 60 or older may be enrolled in undergraduate courses on a space available basis, without tuition or fee charges except as indicated below, provided they do so on an audit basis.
A student may audit a course by registering for the course and presenting a written statement of intent to audit the course, signed by the instructor, to the Registrar within the first three weeks of class. The Registrar will record a final grade of AUD, effective at the end of the semester.

Many different types of people audit college courses, including nontraditional students and currently enrolled undergraduates. Auditing is often considered risk-free, since it allows students to learn without fear of earning a low grade or missing out on participation points.
Yes, it is usually required to get permission from the instructor which is usually not a problem unless the class is full. Auditing the entire course is rare presumably because college students are normally so busy with the rest of their courses that there is no time for a class for which they dont get credit.
Students must formally register to audit courses in the same manner as for any other course. You must select the audit option in the action field on the Web registration screen. Unofficial auditing is not permitted. Auditor status cannot be changed to credit status after the change-of-program period has ended.
