Auto, Fire, and Medical alarm systems are excluded. A permit is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance.

(a) Permit required: No person shall use an alarm system that relies on a third-party alarm company to notify the police department in the event the alarm is activated without first obtaining a permit to operate such a system from the police department. A ten-dollar ($10.00) fee shall be charged for such a permit.
To apply, contact State of North Carolina Electrical Licensing Board 1-919-733-9042. The licensing fee is $75 and Approval for testing normally takes 5-10 business days once the board receives the application. The licensing period is 1 year from the date of issuance and renewal is subject to continuing education.
For any burglar alarm system not currently registered with us, you must complete and submit an Alarm Permit Registration Form, renew annually, and pay the appropriate fee.
