For most rehabilitators, NWRA recommends a college degree in biology or ecology. The curriculum should include ornithology, mammalogy, animal behavior, ecology, and related wildlife and environmental subjects.
Before receiving their permits, rehabilitators must meet various requirements, such as specialized training, participation in mentorship programs, facility inspections, and written or oral exams. Rehabilitators who wish to care for migratory birds must also get permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Rescued animals, during preparation for release, are given proper housing that mimics what they would have in the wild and veterinary attention when needed. Animals in rehabilitation can spend anywhere from a few days to several months at WRR before release.
If you find a deer that is severely injured and unable to stand or walk outside our rescue hours, please call your local Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Sheriffs Department, or Department of Fish and Wildlife for assistance.
The cost for a wildlife rehabilitator license is $50. There is no fee for a wildlife rehabilitation apprentice.
