This is a pass/ fail test based on a maximum total time of 10 minutes and 20 seconds. During the test, candidates wear a 50-pound vest to simulate the weight of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and firefighter protective clothing (turnouts).
I dont recommend trying preworkout. Especially if you are not used to it. The CPAT is an event where you use a lot of cardio as well as strength. Preworkout can make cardio very difficult as it is already pumping your body to that point. For training for my CPAT I did a lot of exercises that mimic the CPAT exercises.
Get to the point you can do 15-20 minutes on stair mill at CPAT pace. Then add a vest and build up to 10-12 mins. Finally add the extra weight and try to go 5-6 minutes. If you can do that your legs will have enough left for the rest. Then move fast and dont stop.
The average time completing the CPAT test is between nine and ten minutes, twenty seconds and is composed of eight (8) stages, or stations, of physical testing that simulate the tasks that a firefighter might perform while on the job.
The timing of the test begins at the end of this warm-up period when the proctor who calls the word START. There is no break in time between the warm-up period and the actual timing of the test. For the test, you must walk on the StepMill at a set stepping rate of 60 steps per minute for 3 minutes.

And if you ask most recruits, the stairs are the toughest part. Climbing with 75 pounds of gear is a whole different game. As Training Captain Phil Anderelli explains, this test is designed to push youand thats the point.
