Workers - those who work under contracts of service - are automatically insured and entitled to benefits if injured at work. In addition, their employers must pay premiums to the WSIB. A "contract for service", or a business relationship, is one where a person agrees to perform specific work in return for payment.
Establishing authorization The employer confirms who their authorized representative is by submitting a properly completed WSIB authorization form, signed and dated by an authorized officer of the company. The employer must indicate the account(s) for which the representative is authorized.
The WSIB is funded by the premiums received from Ontario businesses. Your rate is based on the shared risk of all the businesses that do the same type of work in your class and your individual claims history compared to the rest of the businesses in your class.
WSIB coverage is mandatory for independent operators, sole proprietors, partners in a partnership and executive officers in a corporation who work in construction. Most will have to register with us (some exemptions apply). Learn about mandatory coverage in construction.
Most Ontario businesses that have employees (including family members and sub-contractors) must register with us. We provide workplace insurance to 16 diverse industries and cover 324,000 businesses.

Policy. Employers who operate in Ontario generally require WSIB coverage for their workers. WSIB coverage provides employers with legal protection if a workplace injury occurs, and provides injured workers a variety of benefits and services.
WSIB coverage isn't mandatory for everyone in Ontario. The Government of Ontario decides which industries and which types of employees have to have WSIB coverage, and lists them in the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA).
There are two exemptions: Individuals, partnerships or corporations performing home renovation work only, and who are hired and paid directly by the homeowner or resident.
