To convert an Initial Professional License to a Continuing Professional License, an educator must have completed at least three years of teaching experience (either in North Carolina or verified experience from another state) and pass all NCSBE-approved, or comparable, licensure exams required for the license area(s).
Provisional License is issued with the requirement that coursework for SP1 or SP2 license be satisfied at the rate of six semester hours per year. Hours must be completed prior to the beginning of each new school year. Praxis II test(s) may also be required to clear the provisional area.
North Carolina Lifetime License Completed a combined total of 30 or more years of employment as a licensed teacher, administrator, or student services personnel in one or more public school units in North Carolina.
(1) Continuing professional license or CPL. A five‑year renewable license issued to a teacher who has at least three years of licensed teaching experience and meets other requirements established by the State Board. A CPL shall remain in effect for five years after retirement.
