The Bogus Legislature refers to Kansas Territorys first governing body, established in 1855. Free-Soil and antislavery supporters in the area provided the moniker after widespread accounts of fraudulent voting in the March 30, 1855, election that selected the assemblys initial members.
Regular sessions may not exceed ninety calendar days in even-numbered years, unless two-thirds of the members of each house vote for an extension. Although the Legislature may schedule an adjournment and allow for a wrap-up session, the regular session generally ends in late April or early May.
The Kansas Legislature consists of a 125-member House of Representatives and a 40-member Senate. Representatives are elected for a two-year term and Senators are elected for a four-year term.
Members of the Senate are elected to a four-year term. There is no limit to the number of terms that a senator may serve. The Kansas Senate meets at the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka.
