The tangent visual field test at 1 and 2 meters (m). The visual field normally expands on increasing the testing distance from 1 to 2 m. This is due to the increase in the visual angle from X degrees to 2X degrees.
Tangent screen or Goldmann field exam. The object is usually a pin or bead on the end of a black stick that is moved by the examiner. This exam creates a map of your central 30 degrees of vision. This exam is usually used to detect brain or nerve (neurologic) problems.
The patient is seated in a manner that positions the eyes one meter from the screen and such that they are at eye level with the center of the tangent screen target. The lights are dimmed and one eye is occluded. The physician determines the size, color and sequence of the test objects to be used in each exam session.
Static vs. Dynamic Perimetry In kinetic perimetry, a stimulus is moved from a non-seeing (subthreshold) area to a seeing (suprathreshold) area, and the location where the object is first seen is recorded. In static perimetry, stationary stimuli are presented at defined points in the visual field.
Tangent screen testing uses a flat testing surface and is useful for testing the central visual field, but for testing beyond 30 its value is limited (Figure 7). The tangent screen is usually a black felt screen mounted on a wall and testing is performed while the patient is sitting down.

Tangent screen perimetry evaluates the central 30 degrees field at 1 m. The test is done on each eye separately, with the opposite eye patched. Testing at 2 m expands the field defects to twice their 1-meter size so that only 12 degrees to 15 degrees of central field is evaluated.
