1566/15681648) was an armed conflict in the Habsburg Netherlands between disparate groups of rebels and the Spanish government. The causes of the war included the Reformation, centralisation, excessive taxation, and the rights and privileges of the Dutch nobility and cities.
The Compromise of Nobles (Dutch: Eedverbond der Edelen; French: Compromis des Nobles) was a covenant of members of the nobility in the Habsburg Netherlands who came together to submit a petition to the Regent Margaret of Parma on 5 April 1566, with the objective of obtaining a moderation of the placards against heresy
The years 16211648 constituted the final phase of the Eighty Years War (c. 15681648) between the Spanish Empire and the emerging Dutch Republic. It began when the Twelve Years Truce (16091621) expired, and concluded with the Peace of Mnster in 1648.
The Revolt resulted in the dismissal by the Estates General of the Netherlands of the Spanish Habsburg Philip II as monarch, and in the establishment of a commonwealth that became an economic and cultural bellwether of seventeenth-century Europe.
The Dutch Revolt started in 1568 when William the Silent, a former Catholic who supported religious liberty, led rebel forces into battle. The next years saw Catholic and Protestant forces trade victories on both land and sea. Attempts to negotiate a peace were made, but they largely failed.
