The vital statistics of a population are statistics such as the number of births, deaths, or marriages which take place in it. Someones vital statistics, especially a womans, are the measurements of their body at certain points, for example at their chest, waist, and hips.
These data are provided through contracts between NCHS and vital registration systems operated in the various jurisdictions legally responsible for the registration of vital events births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and fetal deaths. Vital Statistics data are also available online.
A well-functioning civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) system registers all births and deaths, issues birth and death certificates, and compiles and disseminates vital statistics, including cause of death information. It may also record marriages and divorces.
The National Vital Statistics System is the oldest and most successful example of inter-governmental data sharing in Public Health and the shared relationships, standards, and procedures form the mechanism by which NCHS collects and disseminates the Nations official vital statistics.
