NSF-REUs are extremely competitive and prestigious. They are normally research positions that are fully-funded, more on the money later, which last 6-10 weeks during the summer.
How much is the NSF stipend?
Each Fellowship provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period. For each of the three years of support, NSF provides a $37,000 stipend and $16,000 Cost of Education allowance to the graduate degree-granting institution of higher education for each Fellow who uses the support in a fellowship year.
$6000 is a pretty good stipend. $7000 is the max Ive seen and those are pretty rare. Most will also provide housing, cover at least some of your travel expenses, and might even give you a meal plan.
