The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) selectively offers five-year awards to students pursuing masters and PhD degrees in the sciences. Only about 16% of the more than 13,000 applicants are usually successful.
Your odds are quite good. This program is basically structured as a carrot to help Americans pursue careers in science, and is not as selective as NDSEG, Hertz, or the insanely competitive fellowships from Google, Microsoft, etc. It has a roughly 1 in 8 acceptance rate---a well-written application has a great chance.
Each Fellowship provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period. For each of the three years of support, NSF provides a $37,000 stipend and $16,000 Cost of Education allowance to the graduate degree-granting institution of higher education for each Fellow who uses the support in a fellowship year.
In a typical year, the NSF awards around 2,000 students a fellowship, which provides 3 years worth of financial support for their doctoral or masters studies.
research and graduate study. Although there are no GPA requirements, NSF recipients will have a 3.6 or better GPA. Evidence of academic achievement and well developed and supported research and study plans supported by strong reference letters are essential.
