Stopping Criteria The BCTT is terminated based on the following criteria: 1) Symptom exacerbation - defined as an increase of 3 or more points on the VAS scale from resting VAS score. 2) Voluntary exhaustion defined as an RPE of 17 without docHub symptom exacerbation.
The Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT) is a graded exertion test that establishes the heart rate (HR) at which exercise-induced symptom exacerbation occurs after concussion. It is an effective tool for diagnosing and managing concussions, as well as making the decision for return to play.
The BCTT can safely identify an individuals symptom-limited exercise threshold9 and be used to guide exercise prescription after concussion. Given that the treadmill test is performed in a bipedal manner, it requires balance and coordination to remain upright.
A HR of 50 bpm on the BCTT is 73% sensitive and 78% specific for predicting prolonged recovery in concussed adolescents who were prescribed the current standard of care (i.e., cognitive and physical rest).
Treadmill stress testing is indicated for the diagnosis and prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD). This is the initial investigation of choice in patients with a normal or near-normal resting ECG capable of performing adequate exercise.
