As the shuttle program expanded in the early 1980s, NASA began a Space Flight Participant program to allow citizens without scientific or governmental roles to fly.
Possess a masters degree* in a STEM field, including engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics, from an accredited institution. Have at least two years of related professional experience in a STEM field or at least 1,000 hours pilot-in-command time on jet aircraft.
NASAs Astronaut Selection Board reviews the applications and assesses each candidates qualifications. The board then invites a small group of the most highly qualified candidates for interviews at NASAs Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Of those interviewed, about half are invited back for second interviews.
There are two ways to become an astronaut: theres military and theres education. For education, you need at least a bachelors and a masters degree in a STEM-field. Preferably a PhD. It has to be in a field thats useful for nasa: they wont send a botanist to Mars if theyre not researching any plants.
