You can work on campus and have CPT. They are seperate from each other. On campus employment is a default employment ability for students and a benefit. CPT is a seperate benfit from on campus employment.
Updated 03/11/2025. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a type of work authorization that allows F-1 international students to participate in paid and unpaid off-campus academic internships and practicums during their degree program.
CPT permits students to engage in off-campus training during their program of study once they meet the eligibility requirements. Students must obtain authorization from a Designated School Official (DSO) in the office of International Student Services and the academic department to participate in CPT.
You can work on CPT either full-time or part-time. CPT requires a signed cooperative agreement or a letter from your employer. If you have 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you are ineligible for OPT, but part-time CPT is fine and will not stop you from doing OPT.
F-1 students may not work off-campus during the first academic year, but may accept on-campus employment subject to certain conditions and restrictions. After the first academic year, F-1 students may engage in three types of off-campus employment: Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
