The digital economy is rapidly transforming the global landscape. Projections indicate that by 2028, it will constitute 17 per cent of global GDP, amounting to $16.5 trillion. This surge is driven by exponential growth in data generation, e-commerce, and technological advancements.
According to the State of Indias Digital Economy Report 2024, released by ICRIER, India now ranks third in the world for digitalisation of the economy. By 2030, Indias digital economy is projected to contribute nearly one-fifth of the countrys overall economy, outpacing the growth of traditional sectors.
The new data show in 2021, the U.S. digital economy accounted for $3.70 trillion of gross output, $2.41 trillion of value added (translating to 10.3 percent of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP)), $1.24 trillion of compen- sation, and 8.0 million jobs.
Digital economy is first proposed by Tapscott (1996) and gradually came into being after three stages: information economy, Internet economy and new economy (Turcan Juho, 2014).
