An aggregate of slime moulds which may grow and spread over several feet is called. Plasmodium.
Slime moulds are saprophytes that lack chlorophyll. During favourable conditions, they form aggregates called plasmodium that can spread and grow widely. The plasmodium forms spores during unfavourable conditions. The spores have true cell walls and are extremely resistant to adverse conditions.
As a wave of cAMP passes an amoeba, it stimulates cAMP synthesis by the cell, thereby regenerating the signal, and it stimulates chemotactic movement of the cell in the direction from which the wave came, thereby causing the amoebae to aggregate at the centre of the pattern.
The chemicals that aggregate cellular slime molds are small molecules called acrasins; motion towards a chemical signal is called chemotaxis. The first acrasin to be discovered was cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP), a common cell signaling molecule, in Dictyostelium discoideum.
They play an important role as decomposers and recyclers of nutrients in the food web. Their diet consists of the bacteria which feed on decomposing plant matter. In turn, slime molds may be consumed by nematodes, beetles, and other larger life forms.
