If you have type 4 hair, youve probably noticed that your hair appears much shorter than it is - because of the tightness of your curls. 4a hair is springy, bouncy and the curls form a tight Sshape. The curls sit somewhat loosely together compared to even tighter curl patterns like 4b and 4c.
Unlike 4a or 4c, 4b has tight Z shaped strands with little definition in curl shape. Often, 4b hair is fluffy and can be soft or coarse depending on hair texture. Because of the sharp angles of the zigzag strands, 4b hair is prone to dryness as oil from the scalp has trouble traveling to the tips of the hair.
Yep wash n gos (however one wishes to define them lol) can and do work on 4c fine hair. I have been sticking with that style since late August. It was tough at first but it has been the best thing for ME. It may not be appealing to some, but I enjoy it.
4a has coils or curls that are about the diameter of a pencil. The hair hangs down naturally, and afros are only possible if the hair is short and brushed out. (If the hair is long and brushed out, it just looks like long poofy hair, it does not have the recognizable dome/round shape of an afro).
One technique that you can try while detangling your hair is to create smaller sections. This will make it easier for you to comb through your hair without tugging on it too much. You can also try using a Wide Tooth Comb or a Hair Pick.

Imagine your curls are tight and bouncy, similar to the coils of a spring. If your hair sports tight and defined curls that retain moisture fairly well yet still require constant hydration, then youre likely a 4A.
Hair Strand Type If you take a single hair in between your fingers and you can barely feel anything, then you have fine hair. If you can feel the hair, then its medium. If you feel a strong, thick strand, then you are coarse.
Coily hair needs more moisture, so make sure you go in with a leave-in conditioner before your stylers. Something rich like our Curl Conditioning Oil-in-Cream is great to really quench your coils. Use the raking method to detangle and ensure even product distribution, and follow with a detangling tool if necessary.
