What is SDF? A basic solution (pH of 10-12) with a 38% w/v Ag(NH3)2F. The silver functions as an antimicrobial, while the fluoride is present in sufficient concentration to promote remineralization. The ammonia stabilizes the solution.
Therefore, at a minimum, the biannual application of SDF is recommended to maintain arrest of unrestored carious lesion.
Disadvantages of SDF SDF permanently blackens caries and can temporarily stain skin and clothes if accidentally exposed. SDF-treated teeth require monitoring and follow-up. Reapplication may be necessary. SDF applied to some cavities may not arrest the decay which could further exacerbate infection and pain.
For best results, SDF should be reapplied every 3, 6, or 12 months. If the cavity still progresses with the first treatment, additional applications by your doctor or dentist may be necessary. It is possible that more advanced treatment by a dentist may eventually be necessary.
