PIR involves recording an occurrence if the target response occurs at any point during an interval. MTS involves recording an occurrence if the target response occurs during a prespecified moment (usually 1 or 2 s at the end of an observation interval).
A major disadvantage of this measurement strategy is that it can underestimate a students behavior since the student may engage in a behavior throughout an interval but stop right before the end of the interval. In this case, momentary time sampling would not capture a good estimate of the occurrence of a behavior.
Example of Momentary Time Sampling in ABA By setting clear definitions for the desired behavior and observing the student every 5 minutes, we could quickly and efficiently assess their progress. The instructor made a note of whether the student was on or off task at that moment.
Disadvantages If the sampling frame is large random sampling may be impractical. A complete list of the population may not be available. Minority subgroups within the population may not be present in sample.
Time sampling Time sampling Advantages observer has time to record what they have seen Disadvantages some behaviours will be missed outside the intervals - observations may not be representative Evaluation1 more row Jan 5, 2013
