A radiation worker who becomes pregnant should notify her department head or supervisor and the Radiation Safety Office (RSO) as early as possible. If the employee chooses not to declare the pregnancy to the RSO, additional controls and monitoring for her radiation exposure cannot be implemented.
These regulations establish the Declaration of Pregnancy, a voluntary written notification of pregnancy submitted to Radiation Safety. With the Declaration of Pregnancy, the worker grants consent to her employer to limit the dose to 0.5 rem (5 mSv) throughout the pregnancy.
If a declaration of pregnancy is made, the worker consents to her employer to limit her radiation dose to a total effective dose equivalent (TEDE) of 500 mrem (5 mSv) throughout the pregnancy. If no declaration is made to the employer, her occupational dose limits remain the same.
A pregnant worker can continue working in an X-ray department as long as there is reasonable assurance that the fetal dose can be kept below 1 mGy during the pregnancy. It is important to ensure that pregnant women are not subjected to unnecessary discrimination.
