If you have 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you are ineligible for OPT, but part-time CPT is fine and will not stop you from doing OPT.
Students can work on either full-time or part-time CPT. There is no limit to the length of time a student can participates in CPT; however, if the student has more than 11 months and 29 days or more of full-time CPT, they are ineligible for OPT. There is no limit to part-time CPT participation and OPT eligibility.
U.S. regulations do not explicitly restrict on-campus employment while participating in CPT. Therefore, I.S. recommends that students who wish to work on-campus while engaging in CPT should apply for part-time CPT and not exceed 40 hours of work combined between their on- campus work and CPT work.
CPT does not interfere with students eligibility for Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation unless they have done a total of 12 months full-time CPT during their degree program.
Part-time and full-time practical training is defined by immigration as: Part-time CPT- 20 hours or less per week. Full-time CPT- more than 20 hours per week.
