Under the Fair Housing Act, students with a documented disability may request an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) in campus housing if it is a reasonable accommodation and does not pose a direct threat.
The University of Rhode Island (URI) has a so-called no pets rule, meaning pets are not permitted in campus buildings and housing facilities. Partial exceptions, however, exist for emotional support animals. Students with ESAs are given reasonable accommodations in URI housing.
Student Responsibility for Emotional Support Animals in Residence Halls at URI: The following policies are pertinent to approved ESAs at URI. The approved ESA is allowed to reside with the student in their residence hall and is allowed to be taken outdoors anywhere on campus grounds where students are allowed to go.
It is the general policy of the University of Rhode Island that pets ARE NOT allowed in campus buildings or in URI Housing Facilities.
The Rhode Island Fair Housing Practices Act (FHPA) requires a housing provider to grant reasonable accommodations to assistance animals (which include emotional support animals) when such animals are necessary for an applicant or occupant with a disability to equally use and enjoy a dwelling.
