In 1992, the Clean Vessel Act was signed into law to reduce water pollution by prohibiting vessels from discharging raw sewage into fresh water or coastal saltwater. The act established a federal grant program, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, to fund sewage disposal facilities.
The Clean Marina Program (CMP) is a voluntary designation program that encourages marina facilities to incorporate the Florida Department of Environmental Protections environmental Best Management Practices (BMPs), which exceed regulatory requirements.
A typical Clean Marina program will have components that cover marina sighting and design considerations, marina management, emergency planning, petroleum control, sewage and gray water, waste containment and disposal, storm water management, habitat and species protection and boater education.
The Clean Waterways Act addresses a number of environmental issues including several provisions specifically related to water quality improvement. The bill transfers the Onsite Sewage Program from the Department of Health (DOH) to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) starting in 2021.
The Clean and Resilient Marina Program is a voluntary program that encourages marina operators and recreational boaters to protect coastal water quality by engaging in environmentally sound operating and maintenance procedures.
