In addition to his Pulitzer Prize and two Oscars, Foote was honored with the William Inge Award for Lifetime Achievement in the American Theatre in 1989, a Gold Medal for Drama from the Academy of Arts and Letters in 1998, the Writers Guild of Americas Lifetime Achievement award in 1999, and the PEN American Centers
The two Footes are third cousins; their great-grandfathers were brothers. And while we didnt grow up together, we have become friends; I was the voice of Jefferson Davis in that TV series, Horton Foote added proudly. In 1992, Foote received an honorary doctorate from the University of North Carolina.
Foote died in Hartford, Connecticut, on March 4, 2009, at the age of 92, while he was working on a production of The Orphans Home Cycle to premiere in the city. At the time of his death, he lived in his hometown of Wharton, Texas, and the Pacific Palisades section of Los Angeles.
Foote may have played down slavery so that Southern soldiers would seem worthy heroes in the epic battles he so stirringly chronicled. Mr. Foote is survived by his third wife, the former Gwyn Rainer, whom he married in 1956, and two children, Margaret Shelby and Huger Lee.
Horton Foote (born March 14, 1916, Wharton, Texas, U.S.died March 4, 2009, Hartford, Connecticut) was an American playwright and screenwriter who evoked American life in beautifully observed minimal stories and was perhaps best known for his adaptation of To a Mockingbird.
