The year with the most refugee admissions (207,100) was FY 1980, under President Jimmy Carter, when the U.S. Refugee Act became law and the modern U.S. refugee system was established (resettlement was previously capped at 17,400 refugees per year, which presidents could choose to increase).
In 2012, 58,179 refugees were admitted to the United Statesa 3.2 percent increase from 56,384 in 2011 (See Figure 1). The annual num- ber of refugee arrivals declined during the 1990s reflecting a shift in the refugee programs focus to more diverse populations in dispersed areas.
1 In this report, years refer to fiscal years (October 1 to September 30). A total of 69,975 persons2 were admitted to the United States as refugees during 2014 (see Figure 1).
At the end of 2013, there were 51.2 million displaced people worldwide (including 16.7 million refugees). Thats the highest figure since the end of the second world war and an increase of six million since 2012.
The 49 Least Developed Countries were providing asylum to 2.4 million refugees by year-end. Pakistan was host to the largest number of refugees worldwide (1.6 million), followed by the Islamic Republic of Iran (868,200), Germany (589,700) and Kenya (565,000).
