The first number of a Dewey Decimal call number indicates the general class the call number falls within. In our example, the book is located under the 300s, which is where books on social sciences are classed. If there is a second or third numbers, these indicates a specific divisions and sections.
The Instructional Materials Center (IMC), located on the Lower Level of the Belk Library, uses the Dewey Decimal Classification system to arrange its materials. The information books are in numerical order, while the fiction books are shelved in order alphabetically by the authors last name.
Dewey Decimal call numbers are organized as follows: Before the decimal, books are organized in ascending numerical order from 000-999. Books are also organized in ascending order after the decimal; for instance, a book with the call number 700 (no decimal) would precede 700.01, with 700.10 further along the shelf.
In the Dewey Decimal System, books are filed digit by digit, not by whole number. This means, for example, that our book at 595.789/BROC would come after 595.0123 and before 595.9. In our collection, Biographies do not use the 921 Dewey number, but rather the letter B for biography.
Dewey Decimal call numbers are organized as follows: The three numbers before the decimal are the Main Class, organized by the subject of the book. The numbers following the decimal are subdivisions of the main class, organized further by subject and author.

The first three digits refer to the broad subject area, and are shelved in numerical order. For example, 945 is shelved before 946. The three digits are followed by a decimal point. The numbers after the decimal point show the sub-section of the subject area.
