Airbus studies started in 1988, and the project was announced in 1990 to challenge the dominance of the Boeing 747 in the long-haul market. The then-designated A3XX project was presented in 1994 and Airbus launched the 9.5billion ($10.7billion) A380 programme on 19 December 2000.
With three jetbridges, A380 turnaround time is 90min. I am sure FR can do a 737 in 25min and airport ground personnel want to get rid of that thing as fast as possible, It is completely feasible as filling up 737 tanks from empty to full takes 20min. The bottleneck is containerless bag handling.
In February 2019, Airbus announced it would end A380 production by 2021, after its main customer, Emirates, agreed to drop an order for 39 of the aircraft, replacing it with 40 A330-900s and 30 A350-900s.
Airbus misjudged market demand, as airlines favored smaller, more versatile models over the A380s massive capacity and hub-and-spoke model. Size constraints, limited runway and gate availability, and inefficient engines contributed to the A380s financial woes, leading to its premature retirement.
A major factor in the decline of the A380 has been the improvement in twin-engine aircraft. Of course, this has affected the A340 and the Boeing 747 as well. At the time of its design, four engines were still an advantage for long-haul over-water flights.
