What are the WIDA Standards? A framework that distinguishes five levels of language proficiency which are defined by specific criteria: Entering, Emerging, Developing, Expanding, and Bridging.
The WIDA ELD standards, developed with the input of Wisconsin educators, support students academic language proficiency. The five standards focus on social and instructional language, as well as, the language for the academic areas of language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.
EL students are required to take the same standardized assessment as their English- speaking peers, but it may be beneficial to allow them to be exempt from taking the test for a certain period of time that allows them to gain content knowledge.
Diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments take place throughout the learning process and provide insight into where students are before, during, and after learning. All three of these assessments can be used with ELL students.
Instead, it is organized by language domains: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing, and by the following grade level clusters: PreK-K, 1-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12.
