There are two main ways that archaeologists collect data; through their own fieldwork and through reviewing information already available. Often when people think about underwater archaeologists they think of a SCUBA diver on the seafloor.
In the rest of this chapter, I describe the eight steps of the archaeological process: background research; research design; obtaining funding; obtaining permission; conducting fieldwork; processing, analyzing, and interpreting data; curation; and dissemination.
Archaeology is the scientific study of the human past, through excavation and related research. Archaeological projects are conducted in a step-by-step process, much like scientific experiments.
Striking examples include the Adena Pipe, copper and obsidian artifacts from the Hopewell Mound Group, the Tremper effigy pipes and Adena engraved tablets. Our collections also provide the basis for current and future archaeological research projects, exhibits and educational programs.
