The Canada $500 One Time Housing Benefit is a tax-free payment introduced in July 2024 to support low-income individuals and families. Eligible applicants must have an annual income of less than $20,000 for singles or $35,000 for those living with families.
If you or your child gets Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Most people cannot make a new claim for Housing Benefit. If you or your child move from DLA to PIP, your Housing Benefit claim will not be affected. DLA and PIP do not count as income for Housing Benefit.
Applying for Housing Benefit in your area You usually need to apply through your local council. Check your local councils website to find out how to apply. You can find your local councils website on GOV.UK.
Who qualifies? You are under the age of 65. You live alone. *You rent the place where you live. You do not receive a housing subsidy from Housing NB. You live in New Brunswick. You are employed. You have filed your taxes for the previous year. Your employment income (before tax) is between $12,500 and $50,000.
The maximum housing benefit that you can receive cannot be more than the rent that you pay or the LHA evaluation, whichever is the lowest.
