Recycle or Trash: Once the placard is cut up, you can dispose of it in your regular trash or recycle it if your local recycling program accepts such materials. Return to DMV (if required): Some states may require you to return the expired placard to the DMV.
The State Parking Permit for Persons with Severe Disabilities (known as the blue hang tag) is now valid for up to 5 years from the date it was issued. When the permit expires, you must re-apply by submitting a new application to DOT by mail. You cannot renew your permit online.
Designated spaces for persons with disabilities, as long as the vehicle is driven by or is transporting the person whose name appears on the license plate registration certificate or placard certificate. The placard must be clearly visible either hanging from the rearview mirror or lying face-up on the dashboard.
Applicants must complete and sign Part 1 of the Disability Parking Placard Application (Form BFS-108). A licensed physician, chiropractor, optometrist, nurse practitioner, or physicians assistant must complete and sign Part 2; he or she must complete and sign Part 3 if the applicant qualifies for free parking.
Free handicapped parking at meters You may not park for free at a metered space unless you have both a permanent parking placard and a yellow free-parking sticker. For information about how to qualify for free parking at metered spaces, please refer to the State of Michigan website.
