If Your Child Has Unearned Income Only A child who has only unearned income must file a return if the total is more than $1,300 for 2024. Example: Sadie, an 18-year-old dependent child, received $1,900 of taxable interest and dividend income during 2024.
Heres the short answer: The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will usually let you claim your child if they work or earn an income, no matter the dependents income source, if certain requirements are met.
In general, in 2024 the first $1,300 worth of a childs unearned income is tax-free. The next $1,300 is taxed at the childs income tax rate for 2024. Any unearned income above $2,600, however, is taxed at the marginal tax rate of the parent(s), that is usually higher than the childs rate.
A dependent child who has earned more than $14,600 of earned income (tax year 2024) typically needs to file a personal income tax form. Earned income includes wages, tips, salaries, and payment from self-employment.
Your dependent children must file a tax return when they earn above a certain amount of income. Dependent children with earned income in excess of $14,600 must file an income tax return (for the 2024 tax year). Dependent children with unearned income of more than $1,300 must also file a return.

People also ask

For tax year 2022 forward, no earned income is required and you may have a net loss. For tax year 2024, you may have a net loss of up to $34,602. However, you must otherwise meet the CalEITC and YCTC requirements. Note that taxpayers without at least $1 of earned income would not qualify for CalEITC.
However, if your childs unearned income exceeds $13,000, they must file their own tax return. Its important to note that unearned income that exceeds $2,600 will be taxed at the parents tax rate, unless the childs tax rate is higher.
Unearned income from interest, dividends, and capital gains are taxed in tiers defined by the IRS. For a child with no earned income, the amount of unearned income up to $1,300 is not taxed in 2024. The next $1,300 is taxed at the childs rate. Any amount above $2,600 is taxed at the parents rate.
