Due to our land types and climate, most of Missouris community is forest.
Missouri has been blessed with an unusual diversity of native plants, animals and scenic areas. The state has some of the largest springs in North America and the second greatest number of caves in the United States. There are tallgrass prairies, deep rich forests, barren glades and numerous crystal clear streams.
Many animals native to the Ozarks make their homes here. These include numerous minnows and darters, southern red back salamander, pickerel frog, northern water snake, pileated woodpecker, belted kingfisher, muskrat and bobcat. Some additions to the area in the 1980s include the nine-banded armadillo and river otter.
Missouri is part of a transition zone, and our natural habitats range from virtually treeless prairie through true forest, which is 100 percent covered by tree canopy.
Missouris natural environment is highly diverse, with several distinct geological and ecological regions. Rolling hills and prairies are predominant in the north and west; the forested Ozark highlands are in the south; and low, flat land characterizes the states southeast region.
