How much does it cost to plant wine grapes? It will cost about $20,000 an acre to plant wine grapes on Vineyards with flat land. On the higher end, planting grapes on steeper soil can cost up to $100,000 an acre. Keep in mind, however, that steeper soil often produces better-quality wine.
A one-acre vineyard producing the average of 4 tons will yield 640 gallons, 260 cases, or 3120 bottles.
Most home winemaking vineyards are an acre or less, and most commercial vineyards are 5 acres or more. If youre not sure which way you want to go, my usual recommendation is to start with an acre.
However, berry size will be reduced at higher yield levels. Winegrape vines can produce from 1 to 12+ tons per acre when mature, with the optimal range being between 3 to 5 tons per acre. Table grapes may be much higher at 8 to 10 tons per acre.
So 1 ton of grapes yields about 60 cases or 720 bottles. If you put all that together, a very low-yielding vineyard that produces 2 tons per acre makes about 1,440 bottles, or 120 cases, while an acre that yields 10 tons produces about 7,200 bottles, or 600 cases.

Californias wine industry is at a critical juncture. While sales of white wine are increasing, the consumption of red wine is falling, leaving many growers with more grapes than they can sell. Experts estimate that 50,000 acres of vines should be pulled to bring supply back in balance a drastic but necessary move.
To make certain types of wine, grapes are put through a crusher and then poured into open fermentation tanks. Once fermentation begins, the grape skins are floated to the surface by carbon dioxide gases released in the fermentation process. This layer of skins and other solids is known as the cap.
